Sustainability
Our commitment
Equalitas Certification
The Equalitas certification is the certification of the Sustainability Management System for the Wine Industry, which results from audits by CSQA and assesses both environmental, social, and economic aspects.
The Equalitas standard is a benchmark for best practices, indicators and requirements needed to manage wine activities in a sustainable way.
This integrated approach considers sustainability from three basic aspects: social, environmental and economic.
The commitment toward a increasingly more sustainable production model has allowed Banfi Società Agricola Srl to obtain Equalitas certification in 2021 and Banfi Srl in 2024. The Equalitas standard identifies best practices, indicators and requirements necessary to manage activities, promoting an approach integrated in sustainability in the wine industry.
Equalitas Product Certification, issued by CSQA, ensures that the wine conforms to the requirements of the Equalitas standard. It guarantees the traceability of the entire production process, through the identification and verification of good agricultural practices in the vineyards from which the grapes come, to the control of good practices in the cellar and during bottling.

The Sustainability Report
Forest
Forests are the green lung of our territory, absorbing man-made greenhouse gas emissions (the province of Siena has been ‘carbon neutral’ since 2011). Not only that, our forests preserve the natural habitats of local flora and fauna. Moreover, our forests act as natural barriers against soil erosion, protecting the vineyards from degradation.
Mediterranean scrub
Mediterranean scrub plays a crucial role in a wine-growing area, providing a habitat rich in biodiversity that promotes ecosystem balance. In addition, typical scrubland vegetation contributes to the regulation of the microclimate, creating favorable conditions for the cultivation of vines. The scrub's aromatic plants can positively influence the aromatic profile of the wines produced. Finally, the presence of well-preserved Mediterranean scrubland highlights the winery's commitment to environmental sustainability and land preservation.
Bees
Bees play a vital role not only for the entire planet, but also for the wine world as they improve biodiversity and enhance plant pollination, supporting a harmonious ecosystem. The installation of 80 beehives reflects Banfi's commitment to protecting these precious insects, which contribute to the health of the vineyards and the quality of the wine. Bees promote the natural fertility of the soil, which is essential for lush and sustainable viticulture. Moreover, beekeeping is perfectly integrated with the company's ecological practices, enhancing wine production in an eco-friendly manner. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
Amiata donkey
Originating from Monte Amiata in Tuscany, the Amiata donkey is an autochthonous and robust species, a symbol of the local agricultural tradition. This animal is particularly prized for its endurance and ability to adapt to difficult terrain, making it ideal for organic farming and vineyard work. Banfi owns two specimens of the Amiatina breed and breeds them in compliance with the animal's welfare conditions with the sole aim of maintaining the breed in order to help preserve the biodiversity and cultural heritage of the region.
