Brunello di Montalcino

Banfi's Brunello di Montalcino originates from the estate vineyards surrounding the Castello di Poggio alle Mura. Zoning studies, which began in 1980, led to the pedological mapping of the entire estate and identified the soils best suited to Sangiovese: well-sloping hillsides where the soils develop on reddish, clayey continental sediments, with a significant presence of stones and pebbles. Since 1982, clonal selection has been carried out internally: the first vines resulting from that work were planted in 1992, and the first vintage is from 1997.

In the vineyard, spurred cordon and the Banfi bush vine coexist, with a planting density of between 4,200 and 5,500 vines per hectare and a yield of 60 quintals. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in combined Horizon French oak and stainless-steel vats; ageing takes place in 60 and 90-hectolitre French oak casks and 350-litre barriques.

Five labels, five readings of the same appellation:

• Castello Banfi — a classic from Banfi's production in Montalcino.
• Poggio alle Mura — from the vineyards that zoning has indicated as the most suitable for Sangiovese.
• Poggio alle Mura Riserva — the Riserva of the same cru.
• Vigna Marrucheto — is rooted in zonation studies, the Banfi bush vine system and clonal selection.
• Poggio all'Oro - Single-vineyard reserve, produced exclusively in great years.

Each card compiles the vintages from 1997 to the present day, featuring the seasonal trends, tasting notes and awards.
