    THE 2020 VINTAGE

Mild temperatures and low rainfall during both the winter and spring periods favoured an earlier start to vegetative development. In the month of June there was various rainfall, accompanied by mild temperatures, which allowed for a surprising vegetative-productive balance of the vineyards. The other summer months were warm and sunny, permitting perfect veraison and ripening of the grapes. Harvesting took place earlier than normal. The grapes, in a pristine state, thanks to good diurnal temperature ranges and the absence of rain, exhibited excellent aromatic profiles and good acidity

    TASTING NOTES

Reserve of great elegance and balance in structure and aromatic profile. The colour is an intense and deep ruby red tending towards garnet. On the nose, the aroma is complex and mature, with balsamic notes of plum and small red fruits well integrated with spicy hints and nuances of tobacco. On the palate it is full, with prominent yet well-rounded tannins. The finish is very elegant and harmonious.

    THE 2017 VINTAGE

In the spring, temperatures were in the norm, and the growing season had a regular start. April and May, which were mild with very little rain, were followed initially by a temperate summer without rain. From July onwards, there was a gradual rise in temperatures, peaking in the second half of August, resulting in an acceleration of ripening times, that, however, realigned with the period, thanks to the rainfall at the beginning of September. The harvest took place in optimal conditions, giving us a Sangiovese at the peak of its expression.

    TASTING NOTES

A Riserva of great elegance and balance in its structure and aromatic profile. Intense ruby red color. On the nose, the bouquet is complex and ripe, with balsamic notes of plum and small red fruits well integrated with hints of citrus and notes of tobacco. In the mouth, it is incredibly full, with important but well-smoothed tannins. Great finish and persistence for a great Riserva.

    THE 2016 VINTAGE

The mild winter, with regular rainfall, encouraged an early bud break. The spring was rather wet with a drop in temperatures at the end of April, which slowed down the growth cycle, bringing it back to normal. From mid-June, and throughout the month of July, there was a gradual rise in temperatures. In August, the excellent temperature range and sporadic rain allowed for the perfect ripening of the grapes. In September, the temperatures were quite high with an excellent temperature range. Mid-month, a few days of abundant rain risked compromising the harvest, but the sudden weather improvement of the following days, the technical and cultivation interventions carried out in the vineyards and the careful selection of the grapes, both in the vineyard and in the winery, enabled to harvest the Sangiovese at its best expression. The excellent insolation in the summer, the good water availability, the important temperature ranges in the summer and the great selection effort determined the convergence of sugar and polyphenol maturation, so that at harvest the skins were already soft and ready to release color.

    TASTING NOTES

A Riserva of great elegance and balance in its structure and aromatic profile. Intense ruby red color, with garnet hues. The nose is sweet and complex with balsamic notes and hints of tobacco combined with aromas of plums, ripe cherries and red berries. In the mouth, it is incredibly full, with powerful, yet sweet and well-honed tannins. A persistent finish is accompanied by excellent acidity.

    THE 2015 VINTAGE

2015 will certainly be included among the great harvests of Montalcino. The copious winter and spring rains, alternating with sunny and breezy days, ensured proper water storage in the ground, together with a homogenous growth of the grapes in the months of May and June. The summer period, with rather high temperatures, favored the regular development of the grape. At the same time, the ripening took place gradually and perfectly thanks to the good day/night temperature ranges. The almost total absence of rain, both during the ripening and the harvest, and the mild temperatures of September, as well as facilitating the harvest operations, preserved the health of the grapes.

    TASTING NOTES

A fantastic year for a Brunello Riserva of great elegance and power. Very intense ruby red color, with garnet shades. On the nose it is incredibly broad, with aromas of blackberry and ripe cherry, well integrated with the notes of coffee, pipe tobacco and spices. On the palate it is full, soft and persistent, with ripe tannins and an excellent acid note that perfect accompanies the sip.

The growing season began at the usual time and spring was characterised by mild and dry April and May; cool and dry June; sunshine until the second decade of July followed by heavy rainfall resulting in falling temperatures. A cool start to August, but from the middle of the month an anticyclonic area of African origin took over, bringing scorching temperatures well above the seasonal average, which lasted for about two weeks. The consequence was severe water stress that accelerated ripening times. Sunny and dry September and October with very warm temperatures.

    THE 2010 VINTAGE

Wine's growth cycle started at the right time with a climate particularly mild and dry in the months of April and May. The sunny days of June were then followed by copious rainfall in the middle of July, resulting also in significant drop in temperatures. The climate conditions in early August were pretty cool, but the region was then covered by an anti-cyclone weather pattern originating from Africa, which led to a spike in temperatures, reaching well above the average for the period and lasting for around two weeks. Therefore hydric stress accelerated the ripening. September and October were sunny and dry with very hot temperatures.

    THE 2009 VINTAGE

The spring start to the growing cycle was marked by abundant rainfall, which helped provide high levels of water reserves. The rainy phase went on until mid-July, with temperatures particularly cool and well below the seasonal norm. After mid July, the weather stayed warm and dry; in this phase, the vines could take advantage of the water reserves accumulated during the spring. Relatively cool nighttime temperatures allowed for the gradual development of aromatics and polyphenols, enhancing the overall quality of the grapes. The harvest went smoothly thanks to dry, warm and sunny days in September and October.

    TASTING NOTES

This Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura Riserva 2009 is a wine of great potential, with its immense concentration and power, and a rare elegance.

The color is deep and intense, with garnet reflections. The nose is complex, with an initial slight balsamic note that during oxygenation in the glass is replaced by delicious aromas of plum and blackberry, well integrated with notes of licorice and coffee. The structure is striking and elegant, with very soft tannins in harmony with the lively acidity. Very long finish.

    THE 2008 VINTAGE

The winter, with rainfall well above the seasonal average and quite mild temperatures, was followed by normal spring conditions. Some rainfall marked the months of May and June, along with relatively cool temperatures through mid-July. The hail storm which took place on Ferragosto (August 15th) only partially effected our vineyards, sparing the choicest fruit and impacting production with only a small decrease in quantity. Compared to recent years, all phases of the growing season were delayed, including the harvest, which took place two weeks late but under optimal conditions.

Great concentration together with immense elegance for the second year production of this Riserva, which rounds out the family of Poggio alle Mura.

    TASTING NOTES

Deep red color with just a garnet shade. The complex aromas are sweet, with scents of plum, ripe cherry and small red fruits, which are well integrated with tobacco and balsamic notes. In the mouth is full, with powerful but soft and pleasing tannins. Huge persistence in the finish and very much suitable for long aging.

    THE 2007 VINTAGE

Thanks to a mild winter, the growing season started early, with anticipated flowering. Heavy rainfall in late May and early June provided sufficient water reserves in the soil to endure a mid-June heat wave. Harvest started about one week ahead of time yet still lasted into mid October without any difficulties, thanks to ideal fall weather.

Exceptional year for the debut of this Riserva which rounds out the family of our Poggio alle Mura cru. For the Castello Banfi estate this harvest inaugurated our new micro-vinification winery-within-a-winery. Here, the passionate attention to detail that has always distinguished us has yielded a more harmonious, rich, and opulent style.

    TASTING NOTES

The color is deep red, with garnet nuances. The bouquet is rich with notes of plum jam, coffee, cocoa and mildly balsamic aromas. On the palate, the wine is extremely powerful and full, while at the same time smooth and harmonious, with ripe and gentle tannins. It has a very long finish, thanks to its big structure perfect for long aging.
