THE 2021 VINTAGE
After a mild and relatively dry winter, the growing season began at the usual time for the Tuscan area. On April 8th, a late frost with temperatures below 4°C affected the lower and middle zones of the Montalcino vineyards, damaging the buds, significantly delaying vegetative growth, and reducing yields by about 10–15% at harvest time. Spring and June saw little rainfall and mild temperatures; from mid-July, temperatures began to rise but never reached scorching levels. August and all of September were very warm, with little rain and constant southern winds.
TASTING NOTES
The result is a Brunello with great personality. Deep ruby-red color with a complex aromatic structure, featuring notes of blackberry jam combined with spicy hints of tobacco. On the palate, it is balanced and elegant, with soft, mature, and well-integrated tannins. The finish is long and persistent.

THE 2020 VINTAGE
Mild temperatures and low rainfall during the winter and spring periods favoured the early vegetative development of the vines. In the month of June there was various rainfall, accompanied by mild temperatures, which allowed for a surprising vegetative-productive balance of the vineyards. The other summer months were hot and sunny, allowing for perfect veraison and ripening of the grapes. Harvesting took place earlier than normal. The grapes, in a perfect state, thanks to good diurnal temperature ranges and the absence of rain, presented excellent aromatic profiles and good acidity
TASTING NOTES

THE 2017 VINTAGE
In the spring, temperatures were in the norm, and the growing season had a regular start. April and May, which were mild with very little rain, were followed initially by a temperate summer without rain. From July onwards, there was a gradual rise in temperatures, peaking in the second half of August, resulting in an acceleration of ripening times, that, however, realigned with the period, thanks to the rainfall at the beginning of September. The harvest took place in optimal conditions, giving us a Sangiovese at the peak of its expression.

2015
THE 2015 VINTAGE
2015 will certainly be included among the great harvests of Montalcino. The copious winter and spring rains, alternating with sunny and breezy days, ensured proper water storage in the ground, together with a homogenous growth of the grapes in the months of May and June. The summer period, with rather high temperatures, favored the regular development of the grape. At the same time, the ripening took place gradually and perfectly thanks to the good day/night temperature ranges. The almost total absence of rain, both during the ripening and the harvest, and the mild temperatures of September, as well as facilitating the harvest operations, preserved the health of the grapes.
TASTING NOTES
The result is a complex and elegant Brunello, the perfect expression of this exceptional vintage. On the nose, hints of coffee and pipe tobacco accompany the fruity aromas of blackberry and plum jam together with a spicy note on the finish. THE 2014 VINTAGE
A rainy and cold year for which the maniacal selection of the grapes from the vineyard already was fundamental. We managed the operation of defoliation, which allowed the grapes a good ventilation and during the harvest, we often made a double passage in the same vineyard. Even in the cellar we worked with the utmost care, our state-of-the-art sorting systems allowed us to work only the best grapes, moreover, a very short post-fermentative maceration prevented the extraction of unripe tannins.
TASTING NOTES
The result is an elegant and balanced Brunello, with a good persistence, complex and sweet aromas and with an important but soft structure and a nice final acidity.

2013
THE 2013 VINTAGE
The growing cycle began with a significant delay, with some rains during the Spring. June was marked by cooler temperatures, under the seasonal average. August and September were hot and dry, but the ripening, despite two weeks'delay, have been supported by water reserves of the previous months. Summer nights were characterized by cooler temperatures, contributing to the improvement of the quality of the grapes. From the end of September, rainfall was abundant, causing problems during the ripening, without affecting the vineyards.
Harvest: mid-September to mid-October.
TASTING NOTES
Thanks to the positive trend of the vintage, the 2013 Poggio alle Mura is very well balanced and harmonious.
Very deep red colour. Complex on the nose, with aromas of blackberry jam and tobacco accompanied by hints of vanilla. The structure is very substantial, smooth and balanced. Long and persistent finish. A wine suitable for long ageing.

2011
THE 2011 VINTAGE
Wine's growth cycle started at the right time with a climate particularly mild and dry in the months of April and May. The sunny days of June were then followed by copious rainfall in the middle of July, resulting also in significant drop in temperatures. The climate conditions in early August were pretty cool, but the region was then covered by an anti-cyclone weather pattern originating from Africa, which led to a spike in temperatures, reaching well above the average for the period and lasting for around two weeks. Therefore hydric stress accelerated the ripening. September and October were sunny and dry with very hot temperatures.
In this higher average temperature year, clonal selection of Sangiovese gave us a Brunello that is is extremely interesting, rich of warmth and allure.
TASTING NOTES
The color is very deep with intense red garnet shades. The scent is sweet and complex, with pleasant notes of mature red fruit and spicier hints of vanilla, pipe tobacco and bitter chocolate. Structure is strong, wide and soft at the same time. The finish is persistent, with a great aging potential.

2010
THE 2010 VINTAGE
The growing season started slightly late, followed by abundant rain in May and June. Temperatures in June were cool and well below seasonal averages; n the beginning of July the temperatures began to warm up and became quite hot by mid-month. Temperatures cooled down again in August again with notably cool nights, which significantly contributed to the quality of the fruit, both in terms of aromas and natural acids. From the middle of August through the months of September and October rainfall was scarce, resulting in an excellent harvest.
The uniqueness of the 2010 harvest, in which all stages, from the vegetative to ripening and harvesting of the grapes, took place in an exceptional way, becomes even more evident for the Poggio alle Mura, that, as a result of the production philosophy of Banfi, gives us a rare and memorable vintage.

THE 2009 VINTAGE
The spring start to the growing cycle was marked by abundant rainfall, which helped provide high levels of water reserves. The rainy phase went on until mid-July, with temperatures particularly cool and well below the seasonal norm. After mid July, the weather stayed warm and dry; in this phase, the vines could take advantage of the water reserves accumulated during the spring. Relatively cool nighttime temperatures allowed for the gradual development of aromatics and polyphenols, enhancing the overall quality of the grapes. The harvest went smoothly thanks to dry, warm and sunny days in September and October.

The winter, with rainfall well above the seasonal average and quite mild temperatures, was followed by normal spring conditions. Some rainfall marked the months of May and June, along with relatively cool temperatures through mid-July. The hail storm which took place on Ferragosto (August 15th) only partially effected our vineyards, sparing the choicest fruit and impacting production with only a small decrease in quantity. THE 2007 VINTAGE
Thanks to a mild winter, the growing season started early, with anticipated flowering. Heavy rainfall in late May and early June provided sufficient water reserves in the soil to endure a mid-June heat wave. Harvest started about one week ahead of time yet still lasted into mid October without any difficulties, thanks to ideal fall weather.
A cru of our best vineyards immediately surrounding the historic Poggio alle Mura castle today known as Castello Banfi, and planted with our carefully researched clones of Sangiovese. In 2007 the new micro-winery, dubbed Horizon, was inaugurated, representing increased attention to detail in both the vineyard and winery, and an artisan's approach to winemaking.

2003
THE 2003 VINTAGE
The seasonal conditions were marked by an intense spring frost and by one of the most severe heat waves in European history. Fortunately, the heavy rainfall of the previous winter allowed for abundant water reserves in the soil, thus avoiding the risk of hydric stress for the plants. The spring frost, combined with the hot summer, allowed for a rich and concentrated fruit, and a significant temperature variation between daytime and night added finesse and complexity. The exceptionally healthy berries of this vintage allowed an optimal quality in the harvest.
Sixth vintage for this single vineyard wine produced with Banfi Sangiovese selected clones; it is actually thank to the great job of selection that, even in difficult vintages as for 2003, characterized by very hot summer temperatures, it is possible to obtain high value results.

THE 2001 VINTAGE
The seasonal conditions were marked by a severe early frost on Easter Eve that reduced the production. Subsequently, sufficient rainfall at the end of June allowed for an optimal balance of water reserves in the soil. The temperature climbed gradually from mid July but without reaching any excessively high peak. Some rainfall in September permitted to Sangiovese to reach a good technological and physiological maturation.
TASTING NOTES
This wine is at its fifth vintage and it is produced from vineyards planted exclusively with clones Banfi sangiovese selection. The wine obtained in this vintage in which the quantity was reduced by the spring frost but with very high quality of the grapes is, with any doubt, of an extremely top level.

THE 2000 VINTAGE
A rainy winter was followed by a cool spring, which allowed for an optimal development of the vegetation until mid August, but then the torrid temperature (over 37°C during the day and 20°C during the night) put the plants under a severe hydro stress that stopped the synthesis process and accelerated dramatically the maturation of sugars. It was one of the most challenging vintages in our estate's history.
Forth vintage for this wine produced in a single vineyard with clones Banfi sangiovese selection. And thanks to the research it is possible to produce good wines even in difficult year.

THE 1999 VINTAGE
A textbook example of a great vintage. The entire season presented optimal conditions for the vine, offering outstanding results for both early and later maturing varieties. Winter rainfall supplied sufficient water reserves that were useful to the plant over a summer that was hot but not torrid. Over a cool spring the vines developed balance that they maintained into the autumn. Light mid-summer rainfall helped stabilize the plant's metabolism and develop ideal tannins and phenols, resulting in deeply colored wines. A proper variation between day and night temperatures allowed the grapes to develop intense varietal aromas and remain in perfect condition for harvest.
Third vintage for this wine produced in a single vineyard with clones Banfi sangiovese selection in one of the better vintage in the century.

THE 1998 VINTAGE
This vintage was characterized by a particularly dry summer season. Elevated temperatures in late July and early August had a significant impact on the quality of the grapes, resulting in a contained vegetative development and, most significantly, a smaller berry size than in previous years. The greater proportion of skins and seed to pulp dictated the terms of vinification, as this situation offers the risk of increased tannins. To soften the tannins, it was necessary to reduce the maceration time and remove the seeds from the vinaccia as much as possible.
This is the second vintage of this wine coming from vineyards made up entirely of clones selected on the estate. Despite less than optimal vintage conditions compared to the previous year, the results confirmed the greater stability of the selected clones mix to varying weather conditions – the precise goal of our original project.

THE 1997 VINTAGE
A Spring frost reduced production considerably. Light rains during version, when the grapes turn from green to purple, allowed for good maturation and gave the vines sustenance to last through the dry month that followed. These conditions combined in a concentration of flavors and the outstanding quality of a five-star vintage.
In the late 1980s, the "Zonazione" project assembled a geological map of the growing areas on our estate and identified the most evocative zones for growing Sangiovese in the area surrounding our medieval "Poggio alle Mura" castle. At the same time, we undertook extensive research in clonal selection to identify the clones of Sangiovese most adapted for making the best Brunello di Montalcino. In 1992, vineyards were planted using the optimal results of both experiments, and this first harvest coincided with some of the best vintage conditions in recent history.
