    THE 2021 VINTAGE

The winter was characterised by mild temperatures and average rainfall, which triggered the start of the growing season in mid-April. Flowering began in the first week of June; the delay of about a week compared with last year was due to the low temperatures recorded in April and May. Rising temperatures and a lack of rainfall in June and July caused slight water stress, but only in some vineyards. The harvest of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes began in the third week of August, and in general, ripening was delayed by around 6–7 days compared with last year. The sunny weather, accompanied by significant daily temperature variations (of up to 13–15°C), led to the grapes reaching perfect ripeness in terms of both aroma and polyphenol content. The 2021 harvest was therefore excellent; in terms of yield, there was a decrease of approximately 5% compared with 2020.

    TASTING NOTES

Following a winter low in rainfall, an abundant snowfall arrived in February which was fundamental for the replenishment of the water tables. Months followed with sparse precipitation and rather high temperatures. Harvest was reached with the usual advance of about 15 days (by now this is becoming the norm) compared to normality. In some areas, slight water stress occurred. The rain that finally fell in early September significantly improved the quality of the grapes, especially those of the later-ripening reds (Barbera, Albarossa, Nebbiolo).

Following a winter characterised by heavy snowfall, a spring with normal rainfall followed. Budburst was regular, but the high temperatures recorded in the second decade of May accelerated vegetative development, resulting in flowering and fruit set occurring earlier than normal. The June rainfall provided a good water reserve, allowing optimal ripening of the grapes, which took place about ten days earlier than normal. Overall, we can speak of an excellent harvest with peaks of excellence.

Rainy spring with temperatures within the seasonal norm. Following regular budburst, heavy rainfall in May and the first ten days of June disrupted fruit set, resulting in rather loose bunches, especially for varieties such as Barbera and Moscato. Furthermore, continuous climate shifts and high humidity levels created ideal conditions for the spread of major vine diseases, forcing winegrowers to carry out meticulous anti-fungal treatments. Temperatures then rose decisively in August, allowing the vines to make up ground in sugar accumulation, and thanks also to excellent temperature fluctuations between day and night, the final quality of the grapes turned out to be very good.
