El primer documento notarial en el que aparece el nombre de Chianti haciendo referencia al vino que se produce en esta región se remonta al año 1398. 

Chianti es la primera zona vinícola italiana definida y delimitada por ley y obra del Gran Duque Cosme III de Médici en el año 1716. 

Los confines actuales se determinaron más adelante, en el año 1932, mediante un decreto ministerial. Si la Sangiovese es la cepa histórica por excelencia, durante los últimos años la zona del Chianti Classico se ha revelado como un hábitat ideal para el cultivo de las cepas internacionales, como la Cabernet Sauvignon y la Merlot, que a menudo completan sucoupage. 

En el centro de este territorio único y de tradición centenaria, en Castellina in Chianti, Banfi gestiona 40 hectáreas de viñedos especializados para elaborar unos vinos que aúnan estructura y elegancia con la personalidad típica toscana.
