A little oa year after Banfi Società Agricola S.r.l. was awarded the Equalitas certification, one of the company's most prized and historical wines Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio all’Oro Banfi 2016, has become the first Brunello to boast an Equalitas Certification for Sustainable Product.
Here is how the Equalitas Certification works and what are the characteristics of Brunello di Montalcino Poggio all'Oro Riserva that made it eligible for it.
The certification issued by CSQA guarantees the compliance of wines with the requirements of the Equalitas standard sensuring their traceability from ingredients to bottling.
The management and control over the entire production process takes place through the identification and verification of good agricultural practices in the vineyards where the grapes are cultivated all the way to the control of good practices in the cellars and during the bottling stage.
The certification obtained in October 2022 represents a very important and immensely valuable milestone for Banfi. A pioneer of Sustainability, one of its founding values and an authentic and emblematic element of its history, Banfi has a long background with its founding values in the harmony between the land, people, the environment and the quality of its production. The journey started on the day of its foundation evolved over the years, following the growing demand for quality and safety in the wine-making world.
A goal achieved, this year with the Equalitas Certification for Sustainable Product, which is part of the broader programme of actions and objectives set in the Strategic Sustainability Plan, which guides the company's choices and is detailed in the Sustainability Report.
Just as for the Equalitas Standard- Sustainable Organizations also the Equalitas Standard-Sustainable Products reviews different areas in every step of the production process, starting with the company's corporate management system integrated with sustainability to ensure product quality.
Three environmental sustainability indicators are taken into account:
There is another area taken into consideration: the one of good socio-economic practices that refers to employees, training, relationships with the local area and community, as well as good economic practices.
Also the good communication practices, with a truthful and documented communication policy, and the Sustainability Report, are included among the aspects previously analysed.
Soil, fertility and irrigation management, as well as plant, defence and harvest management are the parameters analysed in vineyard management, for good agricultural practices.
Good cellar, bottling and conditioning practices refer to aspects of harvesting, winemaking and bottling, cleaning and sanitization of premises and equipment, packaging and waste and wastewater.
The range of Equalitas Sustainable Product Certifications obtained by the wines produced by Banfi is even broader and includes the Brunello range almost in its entirety. In fact, both Poggio alle Mura and Vigna Marrucheto, 2018 vintages, and Poggio alle Mura Riserva 2017 obtained the same certification.
