"It is our fondest desire that this project
will be good for the people of Montalcino,
good for Italy, good for America,
good for all people who love fine wine".
John F. Mariani jr., September 12, 1984,
dedicating the Banfi winery in Montalcino.
"When my family chose to plant our vineyards, build our winery and restore the 12th century Castello di Poggio alle Mura in Montalcino, our decision was based on the heritage of the region’s noble Sangiovese. We firmly believed in the potential to improve upon Brunello di Montalcino and develop Sangiovese.
We challenged our winemakers to find the root of excellence, and from it, to grow extraordinary wine and raise the quality standard of all Italian wines.
Our pioneering research was capital and labor intensive. It took thirty years to complete; yet the results are dramatic. We unlocked the character of Sangiovese from the complex soil in which it is born, and shared that knowledge with our neighbors. A once-sleepy region flourished as a Renaissance ensued.
With the publishing of In Pursuit of Excellence we are pleased to share with you the most tangible result of the many years of research.
The Pursuit of Excellence is case study of soil, environmental, varietal and winemaking breakthroughs, detailing what was found in Montalcino and what was developed it into. Compiled and written by Banfi team in close collaboration with international scholars" - Cristina Mariani-May.
